10 Influential Women of Color Making History

It’s officially Women’s History Month, and we couldn’t be more thrilled! At EDEN, we are all about women encouraging and supporting one another. With a team made up predominantly of women of color, we had to take this opportunity to celebrate a few of our sisters currently making history. Enjoy!

1. Essynce E. Moore

Miss Moore is the first black teen author to write three books being used by school districts across the country! Her series is entitled Middle School Chronicles and includes the installments, 6th Grade Middle School Chronicles: Where No Secrets are Kept, 7th Grade Middle School Chronicles: “Oh Essynce, if only you could see the future…,” and 8th Grade Middle School Chronicles: The Year that Changed Everything. Her books can be purchased on Amazon.com.

2. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Many are already familiar with Ocasio-Cortez, as she is now the youngest woman ever to serve in US Congress. She represents New York and has been holding her ground firmly in the new position.

3. Ilhan Omar

If we’re talking political history-makers, we also can’t forget about Ilhan Omar. She is the first naturalized citizen from Africa AND the first Somali-American to be elected to Congress!

4. Cheri Beasley

In February of 2019, Beasley was appointed to the position of Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court. She is the first black woman ever to hold this title!

5. Kayla White

Currently a North Carolina A&T student, Miss White now holds the title as the fastest 200-meter sprint runner in the world! Yes, in the WORLD! Her time? 22.82 seconds, recorded at the Tyson Invitational at the University of Arkansas.

6. Cynthia Marshall

Just last year, Marshall took over as the CEO of the Dallas Mavericks, making her the first black female CEO in the NBA! The organization was in midst of dealing with a lot of difficult incidents when she began her role, but she has taken them on without wavering.

7. Simone Biles

We all know Miss Biles is an Olympic gold medalist, but more recently, she won a number of world-wide record-breaking titles at the 2018 World Artistic Gymnastic Championships! She became the first AMERICAN (mind you, not first female, or first African American, but first American) to win medals at every event there!

8. Ruth E. Carter

As of the recent Oscars award show, Carter is the first black woman ever to win Academy Award for Best Costume Design for her work on Marvel’s Black Panther!

9. Marsai Martin

You may know Miss Martin as Diane on ABC‘s Black-ish, but she is now also set to become the youngest producer in Hollywood history! She is producing the upcoming film Little, also starring Regina Hall and Issa Rae.

10. Belinda Bennett

Bennett is the world’s first black woman cruise ship captain! In an industry with such a small percentage of female captains in general, she sails the MSY Wind Star to the Caribbean and Europe every winter and spring.

That’s our 10! We hope you’re as inspired by these outstanding women as we are. Each one is breaking ground and paving the way for all the little girls who dream of following in her footsteps. We can’t wait to see and support these and other women as they continue to make history!
